My father is an architect and builder,and first home was a house he designed and built; it was designed to be dismantled in case of rising sea levels.&nbsp;\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>My earliest memories are of scent: the sawdust from our home construction sites, and the sharp smell of ammonia from the plan printer and drawing film in Dad&rsquo;s offices. My first &lsquo;job&rsquo; was photocopying specifications for contract sets and colouring his hand-drawn elevations for presentations and development applications &ndash; I was ten years old. My siblings and I would help out with Dad's building projects however we could. That upbringing shaped not only my love of architecture but also my understanding of the care and labour embedded in every built outcome. For a young boy they became places to hide, explore and play, often away from supervision. These early spatial experiences left a lasting impression on me. Cantilevered rock formations and soft landscapes are reflected in still water, and elevated sandstone caves frame views over the dramatic landscape. It all seemed impossible, magical. This was a place of calm, a place where you felt safe and strangely at home, but inside my mind was racing. It wasn&rsquo;t until when we moved to Brisbane, that I would see buildings that had a similar effect on me. It has also allowed me to refine skills in passive solar design, environmentally sustainable design, and life cycle assessment. Being involved in the design of the UQ Plant Future&rsquo;s Facility has led to a keen interest in how architecture interacts with the civic realm through the provision of quality cultural spaces. The kids would run in and out of each other&rsquo;s houses and neighbours were always welcome to drop in.
